I’m as much a Michael Schumacher fan as anyone, but this latest Ferrari 458 Italia promotion gives me the creeps. Modern Ferraris are truly amazing machinery, and the new 458 Italia is a stunning looking car with equally impressive stats from what has been published so far.
Somehow, though, I get the feeling that their target market is a bit different than you and I. Why else would Schumi be wearing that godawful t-shirt? Or the tacky necklace? Either Ferrari’s PR department really knows their prospective buyer well, which no doubt they do, or Michael gets a free pass to do whatever. Or maybe this does hit the mark, a scary thought.
I just can’t imagine that this was planned. Maybe I’m just getting old and living in the past, but show me a picture of Enzo in public where he was not sporting classic Italian clothing style. Image for the company was everything. No matter how much Michael hangs the moon, if this new image portrays the crowd around the modern Ferrari, count me out. The cars are great, but I think the air surrounding them would get a bit stale from the bar and cologne smell. Maybe an Italian would make a better spokesperson. Valentino Rossi, though, is a bit busy racing motorcycles.
