Fiat announced that they are rolling the Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Abarth brands together into one group. Alfa Romeo certainly has been in decline for about a decade as far as sales volume goes, and have been slow to market with new models. This, among other things, has also caused resale values to plummet, which also scares off buyers and causes a further spiral downward. Hopefully the re-grouping of these three performance brands will help to streamline costs, share platforms, and allow for better market branding which captures the essence of performance motoring and the heritage of each marque. Maybe Alfa won’t get lost or mixed with Chrysler after all. The new Giulietta looks to be a great car, and along with the MiTo and the MultiAir technology they potentially have a winner. Now it is up to management to sell it to the wary public and revitalize one of Italy’s most successful automotive brands.

The engineering behind the new Lexus LFA is fantastic, with tuning of the sound of the motor, exhaust, intake and cabin at all revs. With a 9000 rpm V-10, it is no doubt an exciting car to drive. But the look is preposterous, not too different from all the body-kitted Japanese economy coupes that you see on the road. Certainly for a $10k/mo lease (and lease only, no purchases, in order to prevent speculative buying) you would expect a better looking car.

There is a lot of speculation about what is going to happen with the Alfa Romeo re-introduction to the USA, but it appears that one new model will be a replacement for the mid-size 166 sedan. The 169 will likely be rear-wheel drive and possibly based on a Chrysler 300 platform. Not quite sure what to think about that, although it is solid will it be sporty enough to uphold the Alfa tradition? No doubt the brand will have to go after the BMW 5-series and Mercedes E-class among others, but that is a very tough challenge, particularly with American buyers who basically have no strong feeling for the brand and the historical reputation for quality and dealer support is mediocre at best. But I like the looks of the car, if this is anywhere close to the real thing.

Ducati 1098R – Click above for high-res image gallery
Ducati has been a very successful, albeit small in the grand scheme of things, performance motorcycle manufacturer and incredibly successful racing team. A move by VW to purchase Ducati doesn’t seem to make sense, how would this add substantially to their overall bottom line? [...]

Alfa Romeo Mito Multiair review – Telegraph.co.uk

October 4, 2009

via news.google.com
Great review of the new Alfa Romeo MiTo with the new MultiAir motors, from the UK Telegraph. If Fiat brings the forced induction model to the USA it might sell well, at least for an Alfa. They are certainly an acquired taste, but so are most of the other European [...]

Alfa Romeo introduces the new MiTo Quadrifoglio at the Frankfurt auto show.

from Autoblog.com

Looks like a great car, and they're utilizing their MultiAir engine which improves power as well as fuel mileage.  With Chrysler struggling, I'm afraid that we'll never see this Alfa in the US.  All the recent reports point to the Fiat effort to [...]
